This was the final stop for the 2018 Mustache Mosey.  Summitpost described it as obscure, remote, and not well documented and more importantly it looked like something we could do in a half day after the morning spent sledding Kelso Dunes.

This was the second day of the 2018 Mustache Mosey and we'd decided to mix it up a bit similar to last year.  We still had a peak planned for the day but first we planned to visit Kelso Dunes and spend some time sledding down the sand!

The Mustache Mosey (aka The Premier Upper Lip Hair Based Desert Social Event Of The Season) was started back in 2011 by myself and Jack Kieffer as a way to spice up a relatively pedestrian pair of peaks with some not insignificant access difficulties.  Peaks were climbed, ridiculous mustaches were worn, and unfortunately several vehicles had tires shredded before we were done.  And we've maintained the tradition ever since.  (Except for the tires.  Mostly...)

It's since become a favorite of some and a cause of much confusion and head shaking for others.

This year we were headed out to Mojave east of Barstow along the 40.  We had three activities planned for the weekend the first of which was a climb of Providence Benchmark.  Providence is less well known than its neighbors as the range includes the DPS peaks Edgar and Mitchelle which are slightly infamous for their epic amounts of cactus.

Providence looked to be a little gentler and yet included more varied vegetation than some desert peaks while having the extra advantage of a perfect tucked away camp nearby.

This was the second day of the 2017 Mustache Mosey and we planned to have an easy day climbing the 3rd -ish class pile of rocks called Teutonia Peak.

McCoy Mountain (4th Annual Mustache Mosey Day 2)

Yesterday's climb of Big Maria HP and the subsequent festivities had left us possibly a bit hung over and certainly low on sleep.  Still, we had a plan and another peak in our sights so with the exception of a few friends with other plans most of us saddled up and headed west along the 10.

I picked McCoy Mountain pretty much at random looking at interesting ranges in the area that I haven't been up yet.

I couldn't find any beta on routes so I picked a few likely looking routes and figured we'd play it by ear.

The Mustache Mosey (aka The Premier Upper Lip Hair Based Desert Social Event Of The Season) has now become an annual tradition.  Two days, two peaks, one big party, and the most ridiculous fake mustaches that can be managed.

The first took place in Death Valley climbing Manley and Needle and is still legendary for the number of popped tires.

The second went a bit smoother and we climbed Spirit & McCullough with a huge group.

The third year we did Vigin our near Mesquite in Nevada and attempted Bangs only to pop two tires on one of the vehicles on approach requiring a run into town before we could limp out.

For the fourth we wanted something within a 4 or 5 hour drive that preferably wouldn't cause too much tire damage.  After much research Jack and I settled on Big Maria Mountains High Point and McCoy Mountain.  The former is a Desert Peaks Section list part of the dwindling number I haven't done yet while the second was an unknown that just looked interesting.

2nd Annual Mustache Mosey DPS Outing To Spirit & McCullough

Last year while trying to come up with a way to liven up a two-day desert climb of the somewhat unremarkable Manly & Needle a few of us hit on the idea of making it a theme trip. And hence the First Annual Mustache Mosey (then referred to a the Manly Mustache Mosey) was born!

Two peaks, one sausage-themed happy hour, 3.5 popped tires, a minor freeze, and a whole hell of a lot of wild donkeys later we declared victory and got the hell out.

Manly & Needle Mustache Mosey

When:  November 5th & 6th, 2011
Where:  Mojave National Preserve, CA
Who:  Matthew Hengst, Jack Kieffer, Adrienne Benedict, Anne Kircher, Mark Peterson, James Barlow, Laurent Hoffman, Ann Shields, Virgil Shields, Keith Christenson, Angelo Lopez, Bob Meyers, Mark Butski, Becky Cummings, Lisa Miyake

GPS Track:

This trip came about because Adrienne Benedict and I wanted to lead something together after the depressingly uncomplicated Hengst & White Chief trip this summer.  As Jack was free also this particular weekend we happily roped him in to the trip and then went about finding some peaks.

The time of year meant we were looking out to the desert so I offered a few different pairs that had reasonably mild stats.

I mentioned Manly and Needle only to have Adrienne ask if there was anything interesting about them.  Not knowing a damn thing about the peaks I went for the obvious, we’d throw a theme trip!
